A shirt that fits. Dads, and most guys for that matter, wear shirts that are too big for them. Button-down shirts tend to billow like clouds, and short sleeves of polo shirts frequently increase to the elbows and beyond. According to our fashion school experts, these baggy looks make men look older - and heavier. Look for "athletic cut" shirts, which are cut narrower. Even if Dad has a few extra pounds colse to his middle, the athletic shirts will make him look trimmer than the fuller cut versions. As for the right style for Dad, pick a striped or dark solid shirt, which will help elongate his body.
Ipad Sleeves
Flat front pants. Why do so many dads insist on wearing pleated pants? They're not a good look. The pleats add bulk to their hips, and can even make them look shorter. Introduce Dad to flat front pants, like a crisp pair of khakis or dark denim jeans. It's fine if they're a looser fit for comfort's sake; the flat fronts will give him a cleaner, slimmer look regardless.

Cashmere sweater. If your dad's weekend uniform is an old college sweatshirt, give him something more luxurious and stylish to relax in like a cashmere v-neck sweater. (Stay away from cardigans, which can make him look more like a grandpa.) The great thing about a cashmere sweater is that it works for both casual and dressy occasions, so he doesn't even have to convert from day to evening.
A new pair of shoes. Unlike moms, dads normally aren't shoe-crazy, and are quite content with the understanding of wearing the same shoes for years until they disintegrate. Treat your dad to a new pair of shoes, but make it a superior style like Sperry Topsiders, Bass leather loafers, or Chuck Taylor All-Stars, so even though they're new, Dad will welcome them like old friends.
A man bag. Dads today have more things to lug around: wallet, keys, cell phone, iPad, Gps, office key cards, and that's just the beginning. He can't possibly fit them all in his pockets (especially if he's wearing his new flat front pants), so he needs a bag in which he can carry it all. Avoid anyone that looks like a purse, and pick a more masculine style. A book on men's fashion. If your dad is skeptical of any fashion guidance you might give, he might be more likely to listen to the experts. Magazines like "Esquire" and "Details" have published books on how to dress, and even division market like Nordstrom have gotten in the act with their own men's style manual. Give him one of these books, and he just might pick up a few pointers.
